Hyperthyroidism in Cats

Hyper means too much of something, and in this case the thyroid glands develop abnormal tissue and produce too much thyroid hormone. As a result, bodily functions to speed up.

Signs of hyperthyroidism may include:

  • Increased appetite & thirst
  • Weight loss
  • Hyperactivity
  • Poor coat/fur condition with possible hair loss
  • Urinating in different locations around the house (outside of the litter tray)
  • Rapid heart rate
  • A lump in their neck
    Not all these signs will occur in every cat with hyperthyroidism.

Your vet will diagnose if your cat has hyperthyroidism based on the information you provide and a physical examination.

How is hyperthyroidism treated?

Cats that have hyperthyroidism have a reduced quality of life and, if untreated, the condition can result in heart failure, blindness or death.
